Radiesse

Q: What is RADIESSE?

A: Radiesse is a volumizing filler, FDA approved for subdermal implantation for correction of facial wrinkles and folds (most commonly known as nasolabial folds) and to shape facial contours and add facial volume.

Q: What is RADIESSE used for?

A: Radiesse is used to fill moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds-the creases that extend from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth. It can be used as a volumizer to shape and sculpt an aging face to give a more youthful appearance and to fill in and even out atrophic scars.

Q: What is RADIESSE made of?

A: Radiesse contains microspheres made of a natural material called Calcium Hydroxylapatite (a substance that occurs naturally in human bones and teeth) in a water based gel carrier. It is not tested on animals, and includes no animal products. Calcium Hydroxylapatite has a history of safe use in otology (ears), laryngeal (vocal chords), and dental and orthopedic applications.

Q: How does RADIESSE work?

A: Radiesse is injected just below the surface of the skin, plumping up and smoothing the area, and improving appearance. Once injected, Radiesse immediately adds fullness to that particular area of your face giving you a visible result at the first treatment session. The hydrogel that Radiesse is made of carries the particles of calcium hydroxylapatite and holds them in place under the skin, creating a dermal filler. The effects of Radiesse are immediately apparent. Radiesse is also a collagen stimulating filler that plumps skin from within to create new collagen. As the filler is broken down, new collagen grows at or around the injection site to keep the area firm and line free.

Q: Who is a candidate for RADIESSE injections?

A: Individuals who are displeased with deep wrinkles around the mouth and cheeks, the volume of their lips, scarring or skin depressions, or frown lines are good candidates for Radiesse treatment. Radiesse can make a marked difference in all of these situations. Talk to your injector about your medical history when deciding on treatment options. You should not use Radiesse if you are allergic to any ingredient of Radiesse.

Q: How long do treatment effects last?

A: Radiesse is a stable material that is not easily broken down by the body, and it is therefore long-lasting. Although treatment effects differ for each person, in a clinical study, Radiesse lasted six months to one year.

Q: Do injections of RADIESSE hurt?

A: As with any injection, injections with Radiesse may hurt. Radiesse is injected in small amounts using a very fine needle. Your injector may apply a topical or local anesthetic to ease any discomfort.

Q: Should I tell my injector what medications I am taking?

A: Yes. You should tell your injector about all the medicines you are taking, even over the counter medicines or treatments. If you are taking blood thinners or medications that may interfere with clotting of the blood, such as aspirin, you might be more likely to have bruising or bleeding at the injection site. There have been no studies of possible interactions between Radiesse and drugs or other substances or implants

Q: Is there any downtime following RADIESSE injections?

A: There will be some slight swelling after your Radiesse treatment, typically lasting from one to two days. (Applying ice to the treated area will help the swelling go down more quickly.) After several hours, you should be able to resume all of your normal activities. However, a patient who has received Radiesse injections should minimize for 48 hours any activities that cause the facial muscles to move excessively or dramatically, such as drinking through straws, laughing, chewing gum, etc.

Q: Are skin tests needed before treatment with RADIESSE?

A: No skin testing is required prior to use. Because the material found in Radiesse is also found in the human body, Radiesse causes no allergic reaction and pre-testing is not required. This is one of the advantages of Radiesse over other dermal fillers.

Q: What are the risks of RADIESSE treatment?

A: Because the material contained in Radiesse naturally occurs in the human body, there is little to no risk of an allergic reaction. Radiesse has been used safely with thousands of patients. Swelling is a naturally occurring side effect that occurs after treatment and should dissipate in 48 hours or less. More side effects may include bruising that lasts longer, unevenness or firmness in the area injected, and as with any injection there may be the risk of infection.

Q: How is RADIESSE different from other fillers?

A: Radiesse is different from other fillers in that it requires no allergy testing; this is because the calcium hydroxylapatites contained in Radiesse are naturally occurring in the human body. Patients who are interested in lip augmentation may find that Radiesse is their best choice among lip fillers for the above reason.

Q: Is RADIESSE FDA approved?

A: Radiesse is FDA approved as an injectable filler. It has been used safely for years on thousands of patients for cosmetic, dental, and orthopedic purposes.

Q: What is the average price of RADIESSE?

A: The cost of Radiesse varies per individual, depending on the area of the skin that is being treated, and how much Radiesse your injector recommends. On average, a single Radiesse syringe costs about $600. A consultation is recommended to help determine how many syringes you will need.

Q: Are multiple RADIESSE treatments necessary?

A: Only one treatment is usually necessary for Radiesse injections. Since the effects are immediately apparent, a patient will be able to tell whether he or she would like to receive further treatment. Radiesse is long-lasting, and the treated skin is soft and natural to the touch. A patient may, however, desire touch-up treatments in individual cases, or decide to combine Radiesse with another treatment such as Botox.
